2. WHEN TO TAKE THE TRIP
The best time for biking in Norway is from mid-June to mid-September. The autumn is a particularly nice time for biking. The colors are at their peak and traffic is minimal.
Rallarvegen (The Navvies’ Road) has, on some short distances, snow even in July. The best time for this tour is mid-July to mid-September.
Temperatures in Norway are usually around +10 - + 25ºC in the summer and usually nice weather for biking.
HOWEVER: the weather can be very unstable, and change rapidly from warm, wonderful summer weather to cold wind and rain.
About the midnight sun
The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon which means that the sun does not set during the summer months. In other words, given fair weather, you can see the sun for a continuous 24 hours.
The duration of the midnight sun depends on how far north you go. At the Arctic Circle, in the county of Nordland, you can experience the midnight sun from 12 June to 1 July, at the North Cape in Finnmark it lasts from 14 May to 29 July, and at the North Pole the sun does not set for six months.
3. ACCOMMODATION / MEALS
Most of the bicycle-tours go through areas with a limited number of accommodation facilities. This means there will be a variation in the standard of the rooms/cabins.
In Northern Norway some of the accommodations are seahouses or fishermans’ cabins (rorbuer), and you may have to share the house, and also the bathroom with other cyclists from Norske Bygdeopplevelser (you always has your own room).
The prices include mostly full board, (dinner, breakfast, lunch pack and thermos refill – bring your own thermos).
The price information, and tour description specifies whether transport is included or not.
For those of you driving your own car (and wanting to combine this with going by train on parts of the trip) there are several possibilities for free parking.
Children under 15 years usually get 50% discount on all prices (staying in parents room), except Rallarvegen (The Navvies’ Road), which have special prices for children.
6. LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY
The bicycle-tours vary in level of difficulty. Some tours involve very long day-trips, while others have schedules suitable for families with children (Family trip in Valdres).
See information about each trip: the bikes will describe the level of difficulty, and are based on the physical condition of an average cyclist:
1 bike: Easy trip for everybody, also for children from about 6 years. 15 - 30 km each day.
2 bikes: Medium level for normal trained persons, 30 - 40 km each day.
3 bikes: The terrain is not very heavy, but it might be hard to sit on the bike for so many days.
You must be in relatively good shape and be prepared for some hills along the way.
7. ROAD CONDITIONS
The trails follow to a large extent existing roads (mountain roads, forest roads, local roads etc.) with little traffic. You must be prepared to walk your bike for short distances on some parts of the trails (tours in the mountain).
National Tourist Routes in Norway
There are still roads that are not merely designed to get you to your destination as quickly as possible. National Tourist Routes are beautiful drives, with that little bit extra.
The routes are carefully selected by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, and each of the 18 routes has its own history and character. The routes are carefully adapted to travelers’ needs. They often offer spectacular viewpoints with service buildings, car parks, furniture, paths and art.
Some of our tours follow parts of the National Tourist Routes in Norway:
Lofoten from Svolvær to Å, Island jumping Helgeland, Island jumping Vesterålen
The arctic route from Tromsø to Svolvær), Biking at the Island Senja
